I just have to say…
February 28th, 2005… that my girlfriend, in addition to being smart, funny, and incredibly beautiful… is… in fact… without a doubt… a total badass! :)
Yesterday, she and I met up with her family at William and Mary so that she, her brother Joey, and her dad could all run in the 26th Annual Anheuser-Busch Colonial Half Marathon… We left Charlottesville a little after 8:00 Sunday morning (after grabbing some breakfast at Bodo’s) which put us in Williamsburg around 10:30 or so… We met up with her family at their hotel, and after watching the end of “Finding Nemo”, we headed to the race…
Having never been to a race of any kind before, I had no idea what to expect… In a lot of ways, it was a lot bigger than I thought it would be… I think Kris said there were probably 3,000 people registered for the half marathon… and in some ways it was a bit smaller… She mentioned that there would be vendors and stuff there, so I was expecting rows and rows… but there ended up being only 5 or 6…
Anyway, the race got off to a rather interesting start… Since it was the “Colonial” half marathon, they had a fife and drum corps to lead the runners to the starting line… At first, we were were going to wait a bit before heading up, but eventually decided to just follow the crowd…. So, after a 10 minute or so walk to the line we stop to take a few pictures, then Kris’ dad heads to the line for the porta-potties for a quick pit stop before the race…. Unfortunately, just after stepping into the line, BANG! the starting gun fires!!! There are still people walking up the field to the line and, worse yet, there are still people IN the porta-potties! Needless to say, everyone scrambled and headed quickly to the line and headed out…. Kris’s mom and I then headed back to the finish line to wait for them to get done…
After about an hour and 45 minutes, we decided to head outside to cheer our racers on as they came around the building for the last bit before the finish… After a few minutes, I see… coming around the corner… you guessed it… my girlfriend, the total BADASS! Running strong and looking like she could go another 13 miles, so sweat… :)
After some cheering and snapping a few pics, I ran inside to try and find her… Unfortunately, security at this race had been tightened a bit since last year so, after being asked by the guard “Do you have a pass?!” I got to wait outside the doors for Kris and her dad to come out…
Kris ended up finishing with an amazing time of 1:55 (she was so psyched to have broke the 2 hour mark), and her dad, I think, came in just over 2 hours…. Joey came in a bit later (around 2:15 I think), which was still a good time….
After some stretching and hydrating, we piled back in the car and, after a pit stop at the hotel to pick up Kris’ car, we pulled in to Pierce’s BBQ for a much needed lunch/dinner…. :) And, oh… my… God… it was good… :) I must say, I would have come with Kris and cheered her on regardless… but a dinner at Pierce’s was definitely icing on the cake….
So, after dinner and some goodbyes in the parking lot, Kris and I headed back to C’ville for some much needed rest… All in all, it was a pretty fantastic day, and I can’t stress how amazing the woman I love is, and how incredibly proud of her I am… :)
Such a badASS! :)
